Why you may need testing

Sexually transmitted infections are transmitted through involvement in unprotected sexual activities, including oral, genital contact, or anal sex, as well as through vaginal sex. In the UK, STIs are prevalent, with approximately five hundred thousand new cases reported annually in sexual health clinics. In 2014, England alone recorded around 440,000 new diagnoses of STIs.

The most prevalent types of sexually transmitted infections include:

• Syphilis
• Chlamydia
• HIV and hepatitis
• Genital herpes
• Gonorrhoea

Sexually transmitted infection symptoms

Symptoms of these infections can vary but may include:

• Lower abdominal pain
• Unusual vaginal discharge
• Itching around the anus
• Pain during intercourse in women
• Bleeding between periods in women
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Painful or swollen testicles
• Painful bowel movements
• Rashes or fatigue
• Fever, headache, or sore throat
• Pain or burning during urination
• Discharge from the penis

While almost all STIs can be treated with ease, HIV is a more serious condition. Though there is no cure for HIV, treatments are available that enable individuals to live long, healthy lives.

What does STI testing involve?

STI testing typically involves providing one or more of the following samples:

• For women, a vaginal swab (this can often be self-administered)
• A genital examination
• A urine sample
• A swab from the urethra (the tube through which urine exits)
• A blood sample

These samples are analysed in specialised laboratories. Testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea usually requires only a urine sample, while HIV and syphilis testing requires a blood sample. Tests for herpes are typically performed only if visible sores are present, in which case a swab is taken directly from the affected area. This may cause minor discomfort.

The testing process

• A swab from the urethra or vaginal area (self-collection may be an option for women)
• A urine sample
• A blood sample

After the testing

Testing is performed on a day-case basis, meaning you can go home immediately after your appointment or as soon as you feel ready.

Pain relief or discomfort

These procedures are usually painless. You may experience slight discomfort during certain tests, but pain relief medication is rarely necessary.
