Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) in Men

    • Non-gonococcal or non-specific urethritis (NGU/NSU): Symptoms involve whitish or cloudy discharge from the penis tip, a burning feeling when urinating, increased urination frequency, and soreness or pain around the penis head.
    • Balanitis: Symptoms are inflammation and pain or discomfort around the penis tip or foreskin, an itchy or rash spot on the penis, thick discharge under the foreskin, unpleasant and noticeable smell, and painful urination.
    • Chlamydia: Can lead to discomfort while urinating, testicular pain, and discharge from the penis head that is cloudy, white, or watery.
    • Gonorrhoea: Can cause pain when urinating, inflammation of the foreskin, and abnormal discharge from the penis head that may be yellow, white, or green.
    • Syphilis: This condition progresses in 4 stages. During the primary stage, the most noticeable symptom, if present, is a sore referred to as chancre that usually develops on or near the penis and is painless.

    Causes of UTI

The primary causes of penile infections are sexually transmitted infections (STIs), poor hygiene, or responses to allergens orirritants. One major factor is poor hygiene since smegma, which is a natural lubricant present on the glans (penis head) and under the foreskin, can accumulate if not cleaned regularly. This build-up may cause a strong odor and restrict foreskin movement. Also, it may result in the collection of harmful bacteria, leading to glans (balanitis) inflammation.

STIs may result in a range of symptoms and complications; hence,it’s important to engage in safe intercourse and undergo regular tests. It’s also advisable for men to have sexual health examinations every 6 months since certain infections don’t show any symptoms.Additionally, reactions to allergens or irritants likelatex in condoms or specific soaps can trigger irritations or infections around the genital area.

    Treatment Options

Treatment varies depending on the form and severity of the penis infection. Bacterial infections are treated with prescribed antibiotics, while fungal infections are managed with antifungal drugs.

For viral infections, taking antiviral medications helps relieve symptoms and the occurrence of outbreaks. Topical remedies like ointments orcreamsmay also be used for localized penis infections.

    Prevention Tips

To remain healthy and safe, consider the following preventive tips:

    • Practicing safe intercourse: Consistently and properly use condoms to lower the risk of STIs.
    • Maintaining proper hygiene: Clean the genital area daily using water and mild soap.Stay away from harsh chemicals and soaps.
    • Stay hydrated: Take a lot of water to keep your urinary tract healthy.
    • Routine check-ups: Scheduling regular sexual health check-ups helps identify and treat infections during the early stages.
